Bl. Mykolay Charnetsky (1884-1959)

Bl. Mykolay CharnetskyMykola Charnetsky, of Semakivtsi, Ukraine, was ordained a Byzantine Rite Catholic priest at the age of twenty-four. Over the years that followed, he served as a seminary professor and spiritual director. Five years after his appointment as apostolic visitor for the Byzantine Rite Catholics of Volyn and Polissia, Father Charnetsky was consecrated a bishop in 1931 at the age of forty-six. In 1945, the Russian Communists’ secret police (the KGB) arrested Bishop Charnetsky and sentenced him to a six-year term of hard labor in Siberia. Transferred numerous times, he served his sentence in thirty different prisons and labor camps, and was subjected to six hundred hours of interrogations and torture. Upon being diagnosed with a terminal illness, he was released in 1956. Nearly three hundred priests who had previously yielded to the Soviet government’s demand that they defect to the state-controlled Russian Orthodox Church came to Bishop Charnetsky to confess their sins and be reconciled with the Catholic Church. The lingering effects of Bishop Charnetsky’s earlier imprisonment led to his death on April 2, 1959.

Redemptorists: Who They Are?

Stampa

РедемптористиThe Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer was founded by St Alphonsus Liguori on November 9, 1732 in Scala, in Southern Italy. The young promising barrister renounces all earthly blessings and fame, and consecrates his life to God. Since then, new missionary order has worked for the most abandoned. Today, there are about 6000 Redemptorists who work in 73 countries and are members of 5 different rites and spiritual traditions (the Maronite, Chaldean, Syro-Malabar, Ukrainian-Byzantian and Latin Rites).

The name of the Congregation

The name of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer is derived from the Latin word “redemptor”, which means “the Saviour”, “the Redeemer”. Redemptorist Fathers are called to carry on Christ’s presence and His mission of world redemption throughout the world. They choose the Saviour as a centre of their lives and try to unite with Him into closer relationship.

Community life

Community is not just a place to stay but, first and foremost, it is a real presence of the Kingdom of God among people. Redemptorists announce the Good News to those thirsty for God’s Word and life in Christ.

Missions

Church is holy but it requires regular purifications. Since it includes also sinners, it constantly goes through the way of repentance and renewal. Missions are very important means for achieving this goal.

Retreats

Retreats are spiritual practices and set of sermons for revival of their participants. Since renovation demands deep and continuous acceptance of Christ, Redemptorists by their own experience, witnessing and preaching seek to lead people to spiritual rebirth and the most crucial choice of life – accept Jesus and follow Him.
